The Food Addict Road to Recovery
The food addict's road to recovery can be as rocky as an alcoholic's or drug addicts's.
Food addiction is a pathological disorder characterized by compulsive, excessive craving for food. It has nothing to do with hunger or need. The victim is always looking for the next food fix.
In it's extreme form, it leads to gorging and purging by vomiting or excessive usage of laxatives. Medical intervention is needed for this condition.
In most cases, however, it can be treated with a program similar to alcohol or drug recovery.
Two possibilities to consider:
- You may have a psychological addiction. You must change the signals that cause you to eat. And you must put healthier, more filling foods in your body. In other words, you must undergo a behavior modification.
- Something else to consider: your addiction may really be a carbohydrate addiction caused by a change in the metabolism of insulin (insulin resistance) which leads to weight gain and obesity, as well as diabetes and other diseases. A low carb diet needs to be followed to correct this condition and to lose weight.
Recent studies have shown that any diet works if you stick with it. The trick is to find one that you can live with for the long term--one that fits your lifestyle and special health conditions.
